Stars coach Ruff on 3rd period collapse: 'We played stupid hockey'

Don Wright / USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Stars had a 4-2 lead on the Philadelphia Flyers going into the third period and looked poised to close things out with the Flyers pulling goaltender Steve Mason.

That's not the way hockey works, though.

The Flyers tied the game twice, bringing the clash to overtime where Trevor Daley took a hooking penalty in front of his own net.

Claude Giroux played hero, handing the Flyers their first win of the season and sealing the Stars collapse. Head coach Lindy Ruff told Mark Stepneski of NHL.com it was a poor display.

The Stars were outshot 11-5 in the third period, and took two penalties.
