NHL Game Summary - Toronto at Detroit
Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Henrik Zetterberg scored the game-winning goal with 10 seconds left in overtime to lift the Detroit Red Wings to a 1-0 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs in the back end of a home-and-home series on Saturday.
Zetterberg, who had four assists against the Maple Leafs in Friday's 4-1 triumph, took a crisp cross-ice pass from Niklas Kronwall in the slot and slapped a shot off the right post past Jonathan Bernier to give Detroit its second win in as many nights.
"It was a hard-fought game for both teams," said Zetterberg. "Goaltending was really good on both sides."
Jonas Gustavsson posted a 30-save shutout in his first start of the season in place of starter Jimmy Howard, who was unavailable due to a sore groin.
Bernier made 31 stops for the Maple Leafs, who lost their fourth straight game against the Red Wings.
"I thought he made some outstanding saves when we made mistakes," Toronto head coach Randy Carlyle said. "(Bernier) stood tall."
Both teams had prime chances late in the opening stanza.
Andrej Nestrasil took a quick pass from Darren Helm behind the net and was denied point-blank by Bernier in close.
Moments later, Mike Santorelli raced through the neutral zone past Kronwall on a breakaway, but Gustavsson stayed with him, making a leg save with under a minute to play.
With five minutes left in the second, Gustavsson misplayed the puck behind his net and got back in between the pipes just in time to deny Joffrey Lupul's wrap-around attempt.
David Clarkson received a pass down low, spun around and sent a pass through the crease, but Roman Polak, who had a wide-open net facing him, never got a shot off due to Helm's tight coverage midway through the third.
Bernier robbed Justin Abdelkader's shot from the left circle with a diving glove save to keep the game tied late in the third.
Tomas Tatar's shot from the top of the right circle rang off the far post represented the best chance in a frantic back-and-forth extra session which produced just three shots.
