Logan Couture scored a power-play goal and added two assists as the San Jose Sharks spoiled the New Jersey Devils' home opener with a 4-2 win in Newark on Saturday night.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Couture's second-period goal was his first of the season.
  • Sharks goaltender Antti Niemi's shutout bid ended eight minutes into the third period when Mike Cammalleri scored his fifth goal of the campaign. It would have been Niemi's second shutout of the season.
  • Tommy Wingels drew a penalty shot with 3:44 remaining, but was denied by Devils goaltender Cory Schneider.
  • The Devils rallied from a 3-0 deficit and cut the lead to 3-2 in the third, before Joe Thornton's empty-net goal with 1:14 remaining sealed their fate.
  • The goal gave Thornton his 1,200th NHL point.
  • New Jersey stayed in the shot-attempt differential battle all game long despite trailing for the majority of the contest.
  • San Jose remained undefeated in regulation this season, improving to 4-0-1. The Devils fell to 3-2-0.
