San Jose Sharks (3-0-1) at New Jersey Devils (3-1-0), 7 p.m. (ET)
(SportsNetwork.com) - The New Jersey Devils and San Jose Sharks will both be looking to rebound from their first loss of the season on Saturday night as the clubs clash at Prudential Center.
The Devils began the season on a four-game road trip, winning the first three before dropping a 6-2 decision to the Washington Capitals on Thursday. New Jersey will play its next three as the host beginning with tonight's home opener.
Rookie defenseman Damon Severson scored a pair of first-period goals in the loss to the Capitals, but Cory Schneider was pulled in the third period and the Devils' were denied their first 4-0 start since 1995-96.
Schneider gave up five goals on 26 shots through 43 minutes of work before being replaced by Scott Clemmensen, who stopped 6-of-7 shots in his season debut.
"I thought we had an excellent first period. I thought we could have had three or four goals," said Devils head coach Peter DeBoer. "We didn't cash in and we came out of the period 2-2 and they got better in the second and the third and we shot ourselves with too many penalties and got a little away from our game plan."
The Sharks, who began last season with seven straight wins, also won their first three contests of 2014-15 before suffering a 4-3 shootout loss to the New York Islanders on Thursday.
Brent Burns had a goal and an assist, Patrick Marleau scored and Tomas Hertl forced overtime with his third-period tally for the Sharks.
"It's a tough league, so we battled pretty hard, came back and got the point," Burns said.
Alex Stalock, who made a few big saves at the end of regulation and overtime to send the game to a shootout, stopped 42 pucks in defeat.
"Anytime you give the lead up it's disappointing obviously," Stalock said. "We knew they were going to come with a push."
Joe Thornton picked up a pair of assists in defeat, leaving the 35-year-old one point shy of 1,200 for his career.
The Sharks continue a five-game road trip on Sunday versus the New York Rangers and won both meetings last season with the Devils. They have taken three in a row and four of the past five in the series overall.
San Jose aims for a third straight victory in New Jersey.
