NHL Game Summary - Carolina at NY Rangers

New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Rick Nash recorded the lone goal of the shootout to enable the New York Rangers to halt a three-game losing streak with a 2-1 decision over the Carolina Hurricanes from Madison Square Garden.

After Nash beat Anton Khudobin down low after faking a backhand attempt to begin the third round, Henrik Lundqvist turned away a hard shot from Ryan Murphy to give New York its first home win after a pair of one-sided setbacks to open its current residency.

"A win is a win and two points are two points," Rangers head coach Alain Vigneault remarked. "Our goalie stepped up at the right time, stepped up in the shootout. Our best scorer scored in the shootout. We have to find ways to win and get two points. That is what we did tonight."

The Rangers trailed 1-0 before Derick Brassard scored near the midway mark of the third period. Lundqvist, who had been shelled for 12 goals over the previous two games, bounced back to stop 29-of-30 chances and all three Carolina skaters in the shootout.

Khudobin came up with 33 saves in the loss, the Hurricanes' fourth straight to start the season. Chris Terry accounted for Carolina's only goal.

"The effort was good," said Hurricanes first-year head coach Bill Peters. "These guys work and compete. Can't question that."

Down by one after two periods and shorthanded to open the third, the Rangers finally solved a sharp Khudobin when Brassard successfully re-directed a puck that Dan Girardi flung towards the net from the right boards at the 9:40 mark of the final session.

New York received a power play less then four minutes after the goal when Jay Harrison shot the puck over the glass, but the Hurricanes were able to kill off the penalty.

Both Khudobin and Lundqvist thwarted their first two combatants in the shootout prior to Nash's eventual game-winner.

"When your third shooter is Nash and he has six goals in however many games we've played so far, we are pretty confident," Brassard said. "He's hot right now. I've known him for a long time and as soon as I saw him in the first practice, I knew he meant business."

The game was scoreless until just over three minutes were left in the second period, with Terry breaking the stalemate by lifting a long wrister that caromed off a Rangers player and went over Lundqvist's shoulder.

New York nearly recorded the first goal while on a power play earlier in the period, but Lee Stempniak hit the crossbar on a open look from the left circle.

Lundqvist put aside all 13 shots he faced in a busy first period, while Khudobin made 12 saves in the second.
