NHL Game Summary - Anaheim at Philadelphia
Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - William Karlsson netted the deciding goal in his first career shootout attempt, and the Anaheim Ducks claimed a 4-3 decision over the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday.
Karlsson, who recorded his first two-goal effort in a win at Buffalo on Monday, completed the fourth round of the breakaway competition by beating Steve Mason from the slot with a wrister inside the left post.
Tim Jackman, Devante Smith-Pelly and Matt Beleskey lit the lamp in regulation for the Ducks, winners of three straight on the road after an opening-night loss in Pittsburgh.
"Yeah, it feels good. I think yesterday the game was way more complete than today's game, but I mean sometimes it's a good lesson when you scramble to hold the lead and play on your heels," said Ducks head coach Bruce Boudreau. "You learn from it and the next game you are better at it, and we came away successful so it made it better."
Frederik Andersen stopped a season-high 39 shots for his third win in three starts.
Mark Streit, Wayne Simmonds and Jakub Voracek tallied for the Flyers, who have dropped seven consecutive shootouts dating back to last season. Mason ended up making 25 stops in defeat.
Mason stopped a blistering point drive from Francois Beauchemin, but was prone when the rebound kicked out to Jackman for a successful backhander from the left side with 7:40 left in the first.
Anaheim went up 2-0 just as another advantage expired, as Smith-Pelly -- uncovered atop the crease -- deflected a shot from Hampus Lindholm between his legs and through Mason.
Streit's slapper from between the circles during a 5-on-3 halved the Flyers' deficit at 12:43 of the second, but the hosts failed to click on the remainder of the 5-on-4.
Simmonds evened the score with 2:25 before intermission, when he kept digging at a loose puck in the crease and shoveled it over the goal line for a power- play marker.
The Ducks ended up ahead 3-2 after 40 minutes, as Beleskey slipped behind the Philly backcheckers Nick Schultz and Sean Couturier for a backhander on the right side with 16.6 seconds left.
Voracek was allowed to skate from behind the net back out in front, and his backhander settled high and inside the far post from the left side for a 3-3 tie with 5:20 left in regulation.
"It's a long season, we played four games, and all four games we could have won," said Flyers captain Claude Giroux, who picked up two assists. "Good teams find a way to get it done. Tonight the first period was kind of how we played in the third period against Montreal, and I think second and third we started playing the way we wanted. One day when we play 60 minutes we're going to have a win."
