Penguins release Dan Carcillo from professional tryout

The Pittsburgh Penguins trimmed their roster to 31 players on Thursday by releasing Dan Carcillo from his professional tryout offer.

Carcillo is still dealing with a foot injury suffered last season and didn't make his preseason debut with Pittsburgh until Monday. With 92 points and 1,179 penalty minutes in 390 career games, Carcillo's role is clear, but it's possible the Penguins deemed him redundant with noted pest Steve Downie already under contract.

Pittsburgh has 17 forwards, 11 defensemen and three goaltenders left on its training camp roster.
