Coyotes GM says coaches were encouraging players to dive

Robert Mayer / USA Today Sports

NHL players know how to hit their coaches where it hurts - the wallet.

The NHL rule change that brought on the most attention (other than the elimination of the spin-o-rama in the shootout, of course) was the league's crackdown on diving and the freshly-imposed coaching sanctions - which were apparently campaigned for by the players.

It was really the players that wanted to add the coaching portion to being fined because they were suggesting that they were being encouraged by the coaches to do it. So, OK, well then after a certain point, the coaches do get whacked.

As part of the new rules, players are only afforded one warning while coaches receive a three-flop cushion. Still, the less head-lashing and arm-flailing the better.
