Blackhawks' Versteeg on last season: 'I was brutal'

The Chicago Blackhawks brought back a piece from their 2010 Stanley Cup Champion team last season in forward Kris Versteeg. After leaving the Blackhawks, Versteeg played for Toronto, Philadelphia, and Florida before getting traded back to Chicago.

He didn't find much success after leaving the Windy City, and was then hampered by injury after re-joining the Blackhawks. Versteeg had offseason knee surgery in 2013.

"It took him probably a little longer than he was hoping for to come off that injury and probably do what he wanted to do," Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville told CSN Chicago. "But I think he prepared himself this offseason."

Versteeg agreed that he wasn't very good. "I was brutal last year in the end stretch ... [Y]ou always want to be a bigger contributor and hopefully that’s this season."

Versteeg says he's going into the season healthy and refreshed. “Time off physically and mentally always helps," he said.
