This Day in Hockey History

James Guillory / US PRESSWIRE

1991 - Canadiens trade for Muller

In advance of the 1991-92 season the Montreal Canadiens acquire center and future captain Kirk Muller and backup goaltender Rollie Melanson (now one of the best goalie coaches in the industry) from the New Jersey Devils in exchange for Stephane Richer and and Tom Chorske.

Muller proceeds to play 267 games with the Canadiens over the next four seasons, managing two 30-goal seasons and racking up 274 total points. More importantly, he adds 17 points in 20 playoff games - and plays suffocating defense - as the Canadiens hoist the Stanley Cup in 1993.

1995 - Maple Leafs sign Gretzky

On 20 September 1995 the Toronto Maple Leafs sign Brent Gretzky, thus creating an easy joke for future news editors writing posts about hockey history.

Let's try that one again. On 20 September 1995, the Toronto Maple Leafs finally landed Gretzky - signing Wayne Gretzky's brother Brent Gretzky to a one-year contract!

Brent proceeds to play the 1995-96 season with Toronto's top minor league club, the St. John's Maple Leafs, recording 13 goals and 41 points in 61 games on the rock.

The younger Gretzky plays in 13 NHL games in his professional career and records a goal and three assists for four total career points.

Brent's meager production aside, he still shares an NHL record with his somewhat more prolific brother Wayne. The Gretzky brothers are the NHL's record holders for the most points ever scored by a pair of siblings at the NHL level, with 2861 total points.

To put that record in perspective, Jordan and Eric Staal would need to combine for 1854 more points in their NHL careers to match the Gretzkys' record; while the Sedin twins, both of whom seem likely to hit 1000 points for their careers, would need to combine for 1214 more.
