Canadiens name 4 alternates but no captain for 2014/15 season

Bruce Fedyck / USA TODAY Sports

The debate regarding the next captain of the Montreal Canadiens will continue as the team named four alternate captains Monday, without designating a leader.

The decision will undoubtedly add fuel to the discussion as to who deserves the distinction after the role of captain was left vacant when Brian Gionta signed a three-year deal with the Buffalo Sabres during the summer.

P.K. Subban and Brendan Gallagher were thought to be among the contenders for the honor, with Subban saying he'd "love to be the captain."

Assuming the Canadiens don't name a leader, it will be the second time in franchise history that they enter a season without doing so. They went captain-less during the 2009/10 season when Saku Koivu departed after leading the team for nine seasons.
