Maple Leafs' Lupul: 'We've had some real ups and downs through the last couple of years'

The Toronto Maple Leafs brought in some new faces during the offseason, and they're hoping the additions are going to be enough to make it back to the playoffs.

Captain Dion Phaneuf made it clear on Saturday that the team would need to get off to a good start in order to have a successful season.

"We're going to have to come together really quickly in training camp because the start of the season is an important part for every team in the League," he told NHL.com.

Forward Joffrey Lupul is hoping for the same thing, telling reporters his time with the Maple Leafs - from making the playoffs, to losing the opening round series in overtime of Game 7, followed by missing the playoffs the next year - has been anything but smooth sailing.

We've had some real ups and downs through the last couple of years. That's part of the process. You look at the teams like [the Chicago Blackhawks and Los Angeles Kings], teams that are there every year. They had those ups and downs too.

The Maple Leafs can only hope what they've done in the offseason will work in their favor.
