Ray Whitney 'not too worried' about whether or not a team will sign him

Ray Whitney may not have a choice when it comes to his retirement.

Whitney is a free agent at the age of 42 after posting 32 points in 69 games - along with no points in five playoff contests - with the Dallas Stars. The Stars elected not to re-sign the veteran, leaving his future in the NHL up in the air, but the uncertainty doesn't bother Whitney.

"I'm not sure yet, and I’m not really tipping my hand one way or the other," Whitney told ESPN's Pierre LeBrun on Thursday. "I'm in shape, I'm skating, but I'm not too worried. There’s obviously limitations to where I would go, but I’m not out there searching for anything, either."

Whitney's nonchalant attitude makes sense considering his career includes 1,064 points in 1,330 NHL games and a Stanley Cup championship in 2006.

He's waiting for a team to call, but he won't wait forever.

"I won’t continue to skate for much longer," he said. "My interest in playing drops with each week that I don’t get something, so I won’t be pressing too much."

Whitney played for the San Jose Sharks, Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Arizona Coyotes, Edmonton Oilers and Dallas over his 22-season NHL career.
