Penguins agree to professional tryout with Dan Carcillo

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed pugilistic winger Daniel Carcillo to a professional tryout deal, the club announced on Thursday.

The 29-year-old forward, a third-round draft pick of the Penguins back in 2003, split last season between the New York Rangers and the Los Angeles Kings. In 57 combined regular season games, Carcillo racked up exactly 100 penalty minutes, four goals and five total points while holding down a fourth-line role.

Carcillo also appeared in eight playoff games with the Rangers, scoring twice and earning a 10-game suspension for abuse of an official (the suspension was eventually reduced to six games).

A willing fighter who can legitimately log a small handful of minutes without hurting his club, Carcillo could be an upgrade over some of the players that the Penguins used in their bottom-six forward group last season.
