Dustin Penner remains unsigned, does not appear headed to Flyers camp

One of the biggest names remaining on the unrestricted free agent market is Dustin Penner.

On Tuesday, rumors abound that the 31-year-old forward was heading to Philadelphia Flyers training camp on a tryout offer, but not so, according to general manager Ron Hextall.

"I haven't heard that," Hextall told the Courier-Post.

Penner split last season between the Anaheim Ducks and Washington Capitals; he scored 13 goals and added 19 assists in California while playing alongside Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf, but mustered only a goal and two assists in the Nation's Capital.

The two-time Stanley Cup winner (2007, 2012) is coming off two consecutive one-year contracts, and has struggled since recording career highs in goals (32) and assists (31) as a member of the Edmonton Oilers six seasons ago.

Still, considering his size, experience and ability to put the puck in the net (averaging 21 goals per 82 games for his career), one would think a contract with one of the league's 30 teams will be signed prior to training camp.

If not, a tryout may be Penner's only option.
