The New York Rangers have signed defenseman Dan Boyle to a 2-year contract.

The 37-year-old veteran of 954 career games spent the past six seasons with the San Jose Sharks, but was let go as part of the team's "rebuild" despite averaging 45 points per season during his tenure in California. Boyle registered four assists in his final seven games with the team, a heartbreaking playoff series loss at the hands of the Los Angeles Kings.

Boyle was an integral part of Tampa Bay's Stanley Cup winning team in 2004, and recorded career highs in goals (20), assists (43) and total points (63) in 2006-07.

Update: The deal is now official.
