Report: Maple Leafs were considering pitch for Sharks coach Todd McLellan

Bob Stanton / USA TODAY Sports

After a catastrophic dismissal from the Stanley Cup Playoffs left San Jose Sharks' management and fans alike utterly mystified, general manager Doug Wilson quickly doused rumors that coach Todd McLellan would fall on the axe for yet another playoff failure.

In keeping McLellan in the fold for a seventh season, Wilson appears to have cancelled an arms race for his coaching services, as four teams, including the Toronto Maple Leafs, were reportedly angling to make him their next bench boss, according to Steve Simmons of The Toronto Sun

With newly-appointed president Brendan Shanahan in charge, Toronto has remained mum on its incumbent, Randy Carlyle, appearing set on allowing the coaching market to reveal itself before ultimately making their decision.
