The Vancouver Canucks sent defenseman Raphael Diaz to the New York Rangers on Wednesday in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick in 2015.

"We tried to make a deal for him last year," said Rangers general manager Glen Sather. "Raphael is a good puck mover, a first-pass guy, can play on the power play. It's a good deal for us, for insurance."

Diaz, 28, has a goal and 12 assists in 52 games this season, while averaging 18:33 in ice time.

Diaz is making $1.25 million this season, and has a cap hit of $1.225 million. He'll be an unrestricted free agent this summer.
