Avalanche's Calvin Pickard: Falls in shootout Saturday

Pickard turned aside 29 of 31 shots before falling 3-2 in the shootout Saturday to the Canucks.

Analysis:

Despite failing to record the win, the 24-year-old has been great behind Semyon Varlamov (upper body) this season, as his record now sits at 4-1-1 to go with a 2.03 GAA and .932 save percentage. When compared to Varlamov's marks of 3.08 and .904, it's a little strange Pickard has only made half as many appearances (seven) as the Russian netminder (14). Apparently Varlamov's injury isn't serious, but if Pickard starts receiving the nod more often -- regardless of the reason -- he'll make an intriguing waiver-wire candidate in all but the very shallowest of leagues.
