Penguins' Matt Murray: Dodges surgery option

Murray (hand) will not need surgery. "It's something that will heal 100 percent," GM Jim Rutherford told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "The biggest thing for us, and that's what I said to the doctor, is we don't need to push this too quick. We're early in the season, we have good goaltending, and let's make sure it's 100 percent."

Analysis:

Rutherford said the team would have a better timeline to recovery in the next 10 days to two weeks. Coach Mike Sullivan said he didn't mind Murray playing in the World Cup of Hockey. "Hockey is a belligerent game by nature," Sullivan said. "There's always risk associated with it, but I think the rewards far outweigh the risks." Murray would miss nine games if he sits out six weeks.
