Maple Leafs' Matt Martin: Will play role of protector

Martin will play the role of protector, not enforcer, this season with the Leafs, reports the Toronto Sun. The team is being transparent about his role.

Analysis:

"Obviously, they brought me here for a reason," said Martin, who led the NHL with 365 hits last season. "I play the game a certain way for seven years in this league. I'm going to continue to play the game the way I did in New York and be that physical presence. At the same time, it's an opportunity to produce more offensively. In talking to the coaching staff, this is something they want from me." Martin's career high in production was set in 2015-16 with 10 goals and nine assists. His value will come in formats that count muscle stats. And in keeping Auston Matthews, William Nylander and Mitch Marner safe.
