Oilers sign Matthew Benning to 2-year, entry-level contract
The Edmonton Oilers have signed right-handed defenseman Matthew Benning to a two-year, entry-level contract.
Benning spent the past four years playing at Northeastern University, where he recorded nine goals and 47 assists in 110 games.
Benning, 22, played 41 games with @GoNUmhockey last season, scoring 19 points (6G, 13A) & helping the Huskies win the Hockey East title.

"I am really excited to be a part of an organization that’s in my hometown and that I watched growing up," said the Alberta native, per the Oilers' website. "I’m just really excited for the opportunity and just appreciate how the Oilers trust in me and signed me."
The 22-year-old was selected in the sixth round (175th overall) by the Boston Bruins in 2012, when uncle Jim Benning - now general manager of the Vancouver Canucks - served as an assistant to Peter Chiarelli. Unable to come to terms with the Bruins, Benning hit the open market on Aug. 16.
Bruins source told me they weren't interested in signing Benning this summer. Wanted him to play out his senior year at NU in '16-17.

"Obviously, there were some teams interested," Benning said of the signing process. "With it being my hometown, that was a big part of it. Also the opportunity to grow with the young players in Edmonton and be a part of something good.
"Obviously, Peter Chiarelli drafted me in Boston, and he has seen me develop over the years and change as a player. I think the main thing for a player is having a team that really wants you, and that’s what I felt in Edmonton."
