OLYMPICS
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) A Chinese swimmer has tested positive for banned substances at the Rio Olympics, becoming the first competitor in the sport to fail a test at the games.
The Chinese Swimming Association said Chen Xinyi tested positive for the substance without providing specifics. Xinhua, the official state news agency, reported the story.
The 18-year-old Chen finished fourth in the women's 100-meter butterfly Sunday, missing a bronze medal by nine-hundredths of a second. She was also scheduled to compete in the 50 freestyle beginning Friday.
There were no immediate details on the positive test, which comes as doping has been a major storyline in the Rio Games.
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - A police officer has died after being shot in the head when he and two others working security at the Rio Olympics got lost near a slum and encountered gunfire.
Justice Minister Alexandre de Moraes announced Helio Vieira's death on his official Facebook page.
The officers from Brazil's national security force were using a GPS device to navigate unfamiliar streets Wednesday afternoon when they took a wrong turn off a highway leading to Rio's international airport. Their truck was sprayed with bullets, and officer Helio Vieira was shot. He died late Thursday.
The other officers suffered minor injuries when the windows of their vehicle shattered.
More than 85,000 security forces have been deployed in Rio for the Olympics, which is double the number of London in 2012.
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - The Daily Beast has withdrawn a story that prompted ire of many readers, complaining that it could have outed gay athletes at the Rio Games.
The story's removal from the site came hours after the editor-in-chief for the publication apologized for the article, which was first revised before being taken down completely.
The story talked about how athletes use dating apps such as Bumble, Grindr, Jack'd, and Tinder to connect with people at the games. A reporter for the site said in the story that he got three dates in his first hour of trying and also detailed what some men wrote on their profiles on Grindr, a popular gay dating app.
Readers and social media users quickly voiced concern that the details in the original version of the story could not only out gay athletes, but also potentially threaten their safety.
Those concerns, Daily Beast editor-in-chief John Avlon wrote in issuing the first apology, were legitimate.
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - The World Anti-Doping Agency and Court of Arbitration for Sport say they have been targeted by hackers, with an attempt made to obtain access credentials for the database which tracks athletes for drug testing.
WADA said it learned ''this week,'' during the Olympics, that it had been targeted, though it was not immediately clear when the attacks took place.
WADA communications coordinator Maggie Durand told The Associated Press in an email that the agency was notified of a YouTube video claiming WADA's website had been hacked. She says an investigation ''was quickly able to determine that the website had not been compromised, although we continue to monitor activity.''
Durand says WADA's ADAMS database of doping results ''has not been compromised,'' but that so-called phishing emails were sent to users of the database disguised as official WADA communications requesting their login details.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
CHADRON, Neb. (AP) - A football player at a small college in western Nebraska has died following the team's practice.
Chadron State College officials said 20-year-old freshman Eric Goll of Haines City, Florida, was taken from the practice field to Chadron Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 12:30 p.m.
No cause of death was announced. Chadron police and the Dawes County Attorney's office are investigating.
Coach Jay Long said Goll was one of the happiest people had ever met and that the hearts of the players and coaches are broken for Goll's family.
BASEBALL
BOSTON (AP) - Alex Rodriguez has been turned down in his request to play the field for his final game with the New York Yankees.
Manager Joe Girardi said A-Rod wouldn't be at third base Friday night at Yankee Stadium against Tampa Bay.
Rodriguez had asked to return to his old position for the last game. He hasn't played the field this season.
The Yankees plan a pregame ceremony to recognize Rodriguez. The team announced last weekend that after the game, he will be released and then become an adviser and instructor for the club.
PRO HOCKEY
In a stunning mid-August shake-up, Patrick Roy has stepped down as coach and vice president of hockey operations for the Colorado Avalanche, citing disagreements with the organization.
Roy made the announcement through a public relations agency, two months before the start of the NHL regular season.
Roy has split control with executive vice president and general manager Joe Sakic, a former teammate. He said he has done his job with ''energy, passion and determination.''
Sakic said he was ''definitely caught off-guard'' by Roy's decision, so much that it took him a few seconds to comprehend that he was resigning. Sakic said Roy had been contemplating the decision for weeks but repeatedly denied that the two disagreed over personnel decisions or didn't get along.
HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
LEXINGTON, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina high school football player has died after collapsing at practice, Lexington County officials confirmed.
Coroner Helen Fisher said Lewis N. Simpkins, 14, of Lexington, was pronounced dead Wednesday night at Lexington Medical Center.
An autopsy was performed Thursday, but Fisher said further studies would have to be conducted to determine the exact cause of Simpkins' death.
Simpkins was a sophomore defensive tackle at River Bluff High School and fell to the ground near the end of a two-hour practice.
Two athletic trainers and an assistant coach began CPR and used a defibrillator while awaiting paramedics, Mary Beth Hill, a spokeswoman for Lexington District One, said in a statement.
