Sharks' Tomas Hertl: Will avoid knee surgery

Hertl said Thursday that he will not require surgery on his knee, Curtis Pashelka of the San Jose Mercury News reports.

Analysis:

Hertl inked a two-year, $6 million contract extension with the Sharks on Wednesday. While it's reassuring that he doesn't need surgery, early signs point to the 22-year-old being questionable for the World Cup of Hockey in mid-September. Hertl held his own in the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs, recording 11 points (six goals, five assists) in 20 games, though the knee ailment crept up in the Cup Finals against the Penguins and ended his campaign four games early.
