Coyotes' Louis Domingue: Inks two-year extension

Domingue signed a two-year contract extension with the Coyotes on Monday, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.

Analysis:

When veteran backstop Mike Smith went down with a significant core muscle injury last season, Domingue stepped in as a rookie and proved that he belongs in hockey's highest level of competition. In 17 games between Dec. 17 -- his NHL debut -- and the end of January, Domingue posted a 9-5-3 record, 2.31 GAA and .924 save percentage. He had his share of hiccups later in the season and finished with a losing record of 15-18-5, while the GAA ballooned to 2.75. Of course, a suspect Arizona defense didn't help Domingue in his quest to finish strong. Smith is signed through 2018-19, and that leaves Domingue as an adequate No. 2 option whenever the 34-year-old needs a breather.
