Flyers' R.J. Umberger: Facing contract buyout

Umberger will be subjected to a contract buyout by the Flyers, Dave Isaac of the Courier-Post reports.

Analysis:

As indicated in the report, Umberger has a no-move clause which gives a player the right to decide whether he'll be placed on waivers as part of the buyout process. Umberger has been swimming in the dough thanks to his signing a five-year, $23 million extension with the Blue Jackets in 2011. He fell out of favor in Columbus and was traded to Philly almost two years ago -- along with a 2015 fourth-round pick -- in exchange for Scott Hartnell. But the 34-year-old was a colossal disappointment in the City of Brotherly Love, recording just 26 points in 106 games and struggling to rebound from a hip injury that required surgery, an issue with his foot, and a few more ailments. The Flyers' decision to buy out Umberger was a no-brainer since he only had one year remaining on that contract and the buyout includes $3 million in savings in 2016-17.
