Oilers sign GM Tambellini to new contract

Edmonton Oilers President of Hockey Operations Kevin Lowe announced that the team has agreed to terms on a new contract for General Manager Steve Tambellini.

Tambellini was named the GM on July 31, 2008 after Kevin Lowe was promoted to the team's President of Hockey Operations. In four seasons running the team, Tambellini has failed to make the playoffs, or even rank higher than 11th place in the Western Conference.

The Oilers' success can be seen in their drafting. In the last three years the team has drafted no worse than 10th overall in the first round. The Oilers have also had the first overall pick in each of the last two drafts, and they will again draft first in the upcoming NHL draft, thanks to the lottery that saw them win out over the favoured Columbus Blue Jackets.

Terms of Tambellini's new contract were not released.
