The Calgary Flames have named Bob Hartley their new head coach. Hartley, who coached this past season with the ZSC Lions of Switzerland's National League A, signed a three-year deal.

Hartley replaces Brent Sutter, who left the Flames in April after three seasons.

Hartley coached Colorado for five seasons and won a Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2001.

The Hawkesbury, Ont., native also spent parts of five seasons as coach of the Atlanta Thrashers.

Calgary narrowly missed the playoffs under Sutter for three years in a row, finishing ninth in the Western Conference this past season at 37-29-16.
