Report: Ryan Smyth willing to join Rangers
Edmonton Oilers left winger Ryan Smyth would be willing to waive his no-trade clause and sign with the New York Rangers, according to a New York Post source.
If the Rangers are willing to acquire Smyth, via a trade, Smyth would likely be interested due to his relationship with Rangers general manager Glen Sather and his desire to win a Stanley Cup.
Sather drafted Smyth with the sixth overall pick in the 1994 NHL draft. The two were together from 1994-2000 on the Oilers, before Sather departed for the New York Rangers.
Smyth earns $4.5 million this season in the last year of his contract, but has a cap hit of $6.25 million, meaning the Rangers would have to unload some players to acquire the aging winger. At nearly 36-years-old Smyth is still an offensive force, recording 16 goals and 18 assists in 51 games this season.
