Ron Washington on injured Rangers squad: 'I'm not going to sulk'

Mar 19, 12:14 PM

Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington is less than two weeks away from the season's March 31 opener, and has yet to put his main lineup on the field for a game together.

As of Wednesday, shortstop Elvis Andrus, left fielder Shin-Soo Choo, third baseman Adrian Beltre, and utilityman Mitch Moreland are all on the shelf.

“This is not typical,” Washington said to Dallas News' Gerry Fraley. “You have some injuries, and hopefully they are early and you get past them. I don’t have any reason behind it.

"I'm not going to sulk. I'm going to put what we've got out there and go play."

Beltre (quad strain) and Choo (arm soreness) could return to the field within a few days, though Moreland's strained left oblique likely sees him open the season on the disabled list, and Andrus' second incidence with elbow-forearm soreness may be of the most concern.

According to the Dallas News report, Andrus won't play again until at least Friday, when he'll be re-evaluated by the team's physician.

“I can’t show signs of panic,” Washington said. “We’re going to put healthy bodies out there. Sometimes, it may not be the bodies that you had intended on being out there.”

Prince Fielder is the only anticipated regular who hasn't been out of commission for any length of time this spring.
