Report: Nikolai Zherdev brawls, smashes Bentley
Less than a week after signing a one-year deal with Lev Prague of the KHL, former NHL forward Nikolai Zherdev has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons.
According to this story from BBC Russia, the 28-year old celebrated his new deal by getting involved in a brawl and crashing his 10,000,000 ruble Bentley (worth approximately $303,000 US). Zherdev is said to have caused such a disturbance in Moscow's Barkhiva Luxury Village that a neighbor scratched obscenities into the car's exterior.
On top of that, there are also reports that Zherdev's wife is filing for divorce, and it is believed that he was unable to fly to Prague to join his new team because he lost his passport.
In an interview with SovSport.ru, Prague club sports director Rashid Khabibulin responded to these reports with the following statement: "if you think that the club will take some steps ... it will not happen. We will not cancel a contract with Nicholas."
The 4th overall pick from the 2003 NHL Entry Draft scored 115 goals and 146 assists in 421 NHL games, and has been playing in the KHL for the past 2 years. Zherdev was not one of the 35 players invited to Russia's pre-Olympic hockey camp.
