Chargers grab C Max Tuerk in 3rd round

Kelley L Cox / USA TODAY Sports

The San Diego Chargers have selected center Max Tuerk out of USC in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

Tuerk is a very versatile player who has spent time at every position on the offensive line during his college career. A knee injury in October cut his season short, and limited his chance to improve his draft stock.

The Chargers have struggled to protect Philip Rivers for years, and Tuerk's addition will provide much-needed depth on the offensive line.

Max Tuerk Bio

Position: C
School: USC
College Experience: Senior
Height: 6-5
Weight: 298 lbs.

Strengths

  • Great in space. Much better than most interior offensive linemen when asked to pull in the run game or block downfield on screens.
  • Athletic. Moves well for a center - or any man of his size - and maintains balance while moving his feet.
  • Versatile. Played four of five positions on the offensive line, and scouts say he looks the part of a tackle.
  • High motor. Doesn't quit on his block until the whistle sounds. Keeps legs driving on run blocks.

Weaknesses

  • Injury issue. Tore his ACL in October and was unable to participate in combine and pre-draft workouts.
  • Thin frame. Leaner and lankier than teams prefer in an interior offensive lineman. Doesn't possess typical linemen strength.
  • Limited strength. Struggles against compact, power-based interior pass-rushers.

Combine Results

Tuerk was unable to compete in most events at the scouting combine due to rehabbing an ACL injury.
