Browns select WR Rashard Higgins in 5th round

The Cleveland Browns have selected receiver Rashard Higgins out of Colorado State in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

Higgins is the fourth receiver selected by the Browns in this draft, not including Princeton's Seth DeValve who played receiver in college, but projects to be a tight end in the NFL.

Higgins has potential to contribute in his first year and will compete with his fellow rookies Jordan Payton and Ricardo Louis for playing time. The Browns will likely have a rather wide open receiver competition in training camp.

Rashard Higgins Bio

Position: WR
School: Colorado State
College Experience: Junior
Height: 6-1
Weight: 196 lbs.

Strengths

  • Has NFL height and length.
  • Attacks the ball with his hands and doesn't body catch.
  • Knows how to get open. Demonstrates good footwork at the line of scrimmage to create separation from defenders.
  • Not afraid of traffic. Willing to go over the middle to make plays.
  • Elusive after the catch. Doesn't go down easy and has a knack for avoiding tackles.
  • Willing blocker. Doesn't shy away from contact despite slender build.

Weaknesses

  • Lacks elite speed and isn't a true deep threat.
  • Needs to add bulk. Bigger corners could take advantage of his smaller frame.
  • Can drift and round off his routes at times. Will need to be tighter getting in and out of his breaks.
  • Production dropped significantly without Garrett Grayson last season. Had nearly 700 more yards and nine more touchdowns in 2014.
