Saints add backfield depth with Daniel Lasco

Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

The New Orleans Saints have selected running back Daniel Lasco out of California in the seventh round (237th overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft.

Lasco is an impressive athlete. Though he was a productive runner throughout his college career, his ability should make him best suited as a receiving back in a high-powered Saints' offense.

Emerging as a fit for such a role, alongside C.J. Spiller, could make him another strong complement to Mark Ingram's ability on early downs.

Daniel Lasco Bio

Position: RB
School: California
College Experience: Senior
Height: 6-0
Weight: 209 lbs.

Strengths

  • Very explosive, which he proved by posting excellent scores in several events at the scouting combine. Vertical jump score was third-best since 2006.
  • Accelerates in a hurry and has the high-end speed to break long runs when he gets to the second level.
  • Decent hands. Can be used as a receiver out of the backfield.

Weaknesses

  • Missed a big part of his senior season due to injury.
  • Lacks instincts and vision. Often takes too long to find the hole and hit it.
  • Not particularly productive after first contact.
