Report: Chargers trying to build stadium in San Diego for 2022

The San Diego Chargers aim to open a new stadium in the city's downtown core by 2022, a source with knowledge of the club's plans told ABC 10 News.

Under the Chargers' proposal, the building would be municipally owned, with a joint powers authority tasked with operating the stadium and all events at the venue.

Qualcomm Stadium is one of the league's oldest facilities, having opened in 1967. Erecting a new venue is of paramount importance to the Chargers organization.

The Chargers would contribute $650 million to the project, a figure that includes a $300-million pledge from the NFL, according to the report. A proposed increase to San Diego's Transient Occupancy Tax would account for the remainder of the $1 billion needed for the project.

Under terms of the reported deal, the Chargers would sign a 30-year lease with a non-relocation agreement, according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The Chargers' previous bid to relocate to Los Angeles in conjunction with the Oakland Raiders was rejected by the NFL's owners in January.
