Browns further address need at WR with Jordan Payton in 5th round

Matthew Emmons / USA TODAY Sports

The Cleveland Browns have selected wide receiver Jordan Payton out of UCLA in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

Payton joins a Browns rookie class that also includes first-round pick Corey Coleman. The pair should go a long way toward improving a very weak group of Browns wide receivers.

Coleman will be expected to start from Day 1, but Payton's draft status means he will likely have to compete for snaps and perhaps contribute on special teams to be active on game days.

Jordan Payton Bio

Position: WR
School: UCLA
College Experience: Senior
Height: 6-1
Weight: 207 lbs.

Strengths

  • Strong. Not afraid to make catches over the middle and battle with physical cornerbacks downfield.
  • Good size. Can withstand hits and uses size-strength combination to block well on perimeter.
  • Durable. Holds the UCLA career receptions record (201 catches).
  • System receiver. Catches what he's supposed to and takes what the defense gives him.

Weaknesses

  • Struggles getting in and out of his breaks. Routinely telegraphs his routes with poor footwork and eye discipline.
  • Lacks necessary speed and quickness to get open against man coverage.
  • Poor acceleration and release. Takes several strides to reach top speed.
  • Benefited from playing in a spread system with simple routes and concepts in college. Played with above-average quarterbacks at UCLA.
  • No qualities or skills that jump off the highlight tape.
