Report: Former Dolphins HC believed Ajayi a 'better back' than Miller

Outgoing Miami Dolphins interim head coach Dan Campbell wanted to give running back Jay Ajayi more carries than Lamar Miller towards the end of 2015, according to Armando Salguero of The Miami Herald.

Campbell believed Ajayi to be the better back but was only able to get the rookie 49 rushing attempts, possibly because the organization wanted to save the injury-prone runner for the long-term future.

The news is also telling because the Dolphins allowed Miller to walk away in free agency, unwilling to match the $6.5-million per-year salary the Houston Texans offered.

With Miller out of the picture and the Dolphins unsuccessful in their attempt to lure C.J. Anderson out of Denver, Ajayi is the only running back of any substance currently on the roster. The Dolphins may decide to sign a veteran, or two, or draft a running back to complement Ajayi in April.

After beginning his career on the PUP list with a rib injury, Ajayi flashed in limited action last season. The talented back fell to the Dolphins in the fifth round because of concerns about the health of his knee.
