Hue Jackson sees in RG3 'a young man who's been kicked around'

It's far too early to tell if Robert Griffin III is right for the Cleveland Browns, but head coach Hue Jackson is convinced about one thing: the quarterback deserves a second chance.

In an interview with Peter King of The MMQB, Jackson said Griffin accepts the blame for what went wrong in Washington and understands that he has plenty of work to do.

"When I looked in his eyes, I see a young man who's been kicked around a little bit," Jackson said. "When we talked, there was a humility to him. He took ownership of what happened to him, of what he needs to work on to be good. He knows he played a big part in what happened. There are still questions to address and work to be done. He knows. In this league, you don't always get another chance like this. Here's one."

Griffin went from NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year to bench-warmer in just four seasons with the Redskins - the result of injuries, stunted development, and the emergence of Kirk Cousins, whom head coach Jay Gruden favored.

"That probably played a huge role in what happened with his development," Jackson said.

The Browns are still expected to draft a quarterback to compete with Griffin for the starting job, but Jackson played coy when asked if they plan on using a high pick.

"I don't think signing Robert says anything about what we'll do in the draft," he said. "You never know. You can never have enough good players."
