The Jacksonville Jaguars have selected cornerback Jalen Ramsey out of Florida State with the fifth pick of the 2016 NFL Draft.

Ramsey is the highest-selected defensive back since Patrick Peterson went fifth overall in 2011 to the Arizona Cardinals.

The former Florida State standout is also the most talented defensive back to enter the draft since Peterson, sporting the versatility to play either cornerback or safety at the NFL level.

Ramsey possesses world-class athleticism and demonstrates excellent diagnostic ability and ball skills. He immediately becomes the Jaguars' marquee defensive back.

Excelling in both press and man coverage, Ramsey is uniquely equipped to square off against NFL wide receivers and could be in line for multiple honors at the end of his rookie campaign.

Ramsey's elite recovery speed allows him to take calculated risks - despite his propensity to play liberally upfield, he seldom gets beat downfield. Arguably the best player in the draft, the Jaguars will expect him to feature heavily in their scheme come Week 1.

Strengths

  • Ramsey has unmatched ball skills and a tendency to track down the football in coverage for interceptions. With excellent hands, Ramsey can secure the ball like a wide receiver and rarely loses jump balls.
  • Ramsey displays elite closing speed, allowing him to bait quarterbacks into risky passes. He also possesses excellent straight-line speed.
  • He excels in press coverage and shows great diagnostic ability at the line of scrimmage.
  • Ramsey's outstanding athleticism and anticipation allows him to be disruptive and reroute easily.
  • Due to his speed and lateral movement, Ramsey seldom gets beat to the outside.
  • He gravitates to the ball and does a great job of bringing the ball carrier down.

Weaknesses

  • Because of his recovery speed, Ramsey at times takes unnecessary risks in allowing his receiver to get behind him to bait an interception.
  • Although he does a good job of wrapping up, Ramsey will need to tackle lower at the professional level to avoid getting run over.
