The Miami Dolphins and running back Lamar Miller are working on a contract extension as free agency looms, according to the Miami Herald's Barry Jackson.

The Dolphins reportedly want to retain Miller on a deal worth about $5 million per year or slightly less. It remains unclear where he sees his value.

Miller joined the Dolphins as a fourth-round pick in 2012 and has flashed big upside at times since then, but also been frustratingly inconsistent.

Some analysts have argued it's the Dolphins' inconsistent use of Miller that is to blame. In 2015, under former Dolphins head coaches Joe Philbin and Dan Campbell, Miller had only one game with 20 rushing attempts and six where he carried the ball fewer than 10 times.

Miller has stated he wants 20 touches per game.
