Report: Redskins, Cousins $4 million apart on annual average

Kirk Cousins will be under center for the Washington Redskins next season, but his long-term future remains in doubt.

The Redskins placed the franchise tag on Cousins ahead of Tuesday's deadline, ensuring he won't hit free agency, but the two sides are continuing to negotiate a long-term extension.

According to NFL Network's Albert Breer, there's still a lot of ground to make up if a deal is to be reached.

The Redskins' offers to Cousins have topped out at $16 million per year, while Cousins' camp is demanding a figure in the ballpark of $20 million.

There's still plenty of time for the sides to find middle ground, but it appears increasingly likely that no extension will be worked out and Cousins will play under the one-year franchise tag contract.

The good news for the Redskins is that Cousins' case reportedly won't include the holdout that often accompanies the franchise tag. According to Breer, he plans to sign his tender and report to the team in April.
