The Indianapolis Colts have informed free-agent-to-be Matt Hasselbeck that they do not intend to re-sign him, with Josh Freeman expected to act as Andrew Luck's backup in 2016, reports NFL Network's Mike Silver and Ian Rapoport.

The 40-year-old Hasselbeck was forced into action this past season when Luck was sidelined for nine games with shoulder and abdominal injuries.

While Hasselbeck performed admirably, his body appeared to break down as the season wore on. He was unable to finish multiple games toward the end of the year because of shoulder, neck, and rib injuries.

However, in a league that's starved for competent quarterback play, it's still possible Hasselbeck gets signed by a team looking to add a veteran presence. Hassselbeck has spoken out about his desire to continue his career.

The Colts will presumably hope that Freeman - who was signed to play in Week 17 due to Hasselbeck's ailment - can realize some of the potential many thought he possessed during his time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Luck had been one of the league's most durable quarterback's before the 2015 season, never missing a start prior to this year.
