Report: Buccaneers' Martin will test free agency, looking to hit jackpot

Doug Martin is reportedly set on cashing in after putting together his most productive season since winning Offensive Rookie of the Year back in 2012.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back will test the open market when free agency gets underway next month and is hoping to hit the jackpot when that time comes, reports Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times.

Martin's 1,402-yard season, second to only Adrian Peterson among the NFL's leading rushers, finally gave him the opportunity to prove himself as more than a one-year wonder.

The 27-year-old appeared in just 17 games, compiling a total of 950 rushing yards, in the two years that followed his standout rookie campaign.

While he now appears to have demonstrated that he's got plenty left to offer, predicting his value on the free-agent market would make for a near-impossible task.

NFL teams have long avoided handing out lucrative contracts to veteran running backs, often opting to instead bring in a younger player through the draft.

General manager Jason Licht, for what it's worth, said Thursday that there's mutual interest between the Buccaneers and Martin when it comes to potentially working out a new deal.

"We've had great discussions, and I think it's pretty mutual he'd like to be here and we'd like to have him," Licht said, according to Stroud. "We'll have to see how it goes."
