Giants owner hopes Tom Coughlin will take role within organization

When Tom Coughlin stepped down as head coach of the New York Giants, owner John Mara said he hoped to convince him to stay as an adviser to the organization.

With Coughlin still available, Mara reiterated Friday his desire to bring back the man who brought the Giants two Super Bowl titles in some capacity.

"He's been away, but I do plan on talking (to Coughlin)," Mara said, according to Bob Glauber of Newsday. "There's still hope."

Coughlin interviewed with the San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles for their head coaching vacancies, and was reportedly the front-runner for the Eagles' job, but bowed out due to concern about his ability to put together his own coaching staff.

The 69-year-old coached the Giants for 12 seasons, but was replaced by his offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo after four consecutive years without a playoff berth.

With all the current head coaching vacancies filled, Coughlin's only choices appear to be returning to New York or heading off into retirement.
