Aikman: Cowboys should consider drafting QB with 4th overall pick

Tony Romo remains firmly entrenched as the Dallas Cowboys' starting quarterback, but that doesn't mean Jerry Jones won't have an eye on the future this offseason, according to former Cowboy Troy Aikman.

The Hall of Famer said Thursday that Dallas, set to pick No. 4 overall in this year's draft, will have to consider the idea of targeting a successor for its 35-year-old signal-caller.

“If there is a player who … is what you view as a franchise quarterback, I think you have to take that guy,” Aikman told Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. “Jerry (Jones) is all in now and certainly he feels Tony Romo can play another three or four seasons, but I liken it a little to the Green Bay situation when the Packers took Aaron Rodgers."

Among this year's top quarterback prospects are Cal's Jared Goff, Memphis' Paxton Lynch, and North Dakota State's Carson Wentz.

With Robert Griffin III and Johnny Manziel seemingly poised to be released by their respective teams, the Cowboys won't have any shortage of free-agent options when it comes to finding a young talent at the position.

Romo, for what it's worth, doesn't appear to be eyeing retirement anytime soon.

"There's no question, I'll be able to play for a while," he said last month, according to Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News.
