Brees, Saints haven't had contract discussions

Addressing their dire salary cap situation is far and away the top priority for the New Orleans Saints heading into the offseason.

Drew Brees' contract, set to account for a staggering $30 million against the cap, makes for the most logical starting point, but negotiations about his deal apparently haven't started.

"If conversations are to be had, they haven't happened yet," Brees said in an ESPN appearance on Thursday, according to Christopher Dabe of NOLA.com.

With the Saints already well over next year's projected salary cap, lowering Brees' cap number is imperative.

An extension would give New Orleans some short-term relief, but it remains to be seen whether the two sides can reach an agreement about the 37-year-old's long-term value.

The nine-time Pro Bowler is likely set to play an 11th season in New Orleans regardless, but his future and the Saints' salary-cap situation are very much unclear for the time being.
