The San Diego Chargers will remain in San Diego for the 2016 season, team president Dean Spanos announced on Friday.

The announcement comes on the heels of a report indicating the Chargers and Rams have worked out an agreement to share a stadium in Inglewood, Calif.

Spanos confirmed the team has an agreement in place with the Rams but said the franchise still hopes to work out a long-term stadium deal with the city of San Diego.

Spanos' statement insists the team's priority is staying in San Diego:

I have met with Mayor Faulconer and Supervisor Roberts and I look forward to working closely with them and the business community to resolve our stadium dilemma. We have an option and an agreement with the Los Angeles Rams to go to Inglewood in the next year, but my focus is on San Diego.

This has been our home for 55 years, and I want to keep the team here and provide the world-class stadium experience you deserve.

Everyone on both sides of the table in San Diego must now determine the best next steps and how to deploy the additional resources provided by the NFL.

I am committed to looking at this with a fresh perspective and new sense of possibility.

With deep appreciation for your years of support,

The announcement by no means rules out a move to Los Angeles as the Chargers will have another year to decide if they will exercise their option and set their Inglewood agreement with the Rams in stone. The news eliminates the possibility of two teams playing in Los Angeles in 2016 without a new stadium.

The Rams are expected to spend 2016 in the Los Angeles Coliseum and released their own statement on the Chargers' future, saying in part:

"We look forward to partnering with the Chargers in Inglewood, but the decision of course is Dean's to make."
