The New England Patriots are waiving wide receiver Leonard Hankerson, reports Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.

After being released from the Atlanta Falcons' injured reserve list, Hankerson joined the Patriots on Dec. 17 to provide passing-game depth heading into the postseason.

Should he clear waivers - which is possible so late in the season - he may still have an opportunity to earn such a role.

With New England opting to part ways with Hankerson to free up a roster spot, there's a belief he'll return to the team if he goes unclaimed, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Hankerson was on the active roster for a Week 15 win over the Tennessee Titans, but was held without a catch in 10 offensive snaps.

He appeared in eight games with the Falcons before being placed on injured reserve with hamstring issues, recording 26 receptions for 327 yards and three touchdowns.
