Eagles give up 5 TD passes for 2nd consecutive week

Robert Deutsch / USA TODAY Sports

Things have gone from bad to worse for Chip Kelly and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Rather than rebound from a Week 11 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, in which the defense surrendered five touchdown passes to rookie Jameis Winston, the Eagles put forth a similarly disastrous effort Thursday against the Detroit Lions.

Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford threw for his fifth score of the day late in the third frame, giving the Lions a commanding 38-7 lead and effectively putting the game out of reach.

Philadelphia's continued struggles, despite taking on two teams that have also experienced their share of difficulties, at that point saw the Eagles outscored by an incredible margin of 76-17 over a span of six quarters.

Detroit would go on to win the game by a final score of 45-14, handing the Eagles their seventh loss of the season and all but eliminating them from playoff contention.

With another potential blowout on the horizon in the form of Tom Brady and the New England Patriots, speculation surrounding Kelly's job status is unlikely to cool any time soon.
