Lions move Haloti Ngata, Joique Bell to active roster

Tommy Gilligan / USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Lions moved defensive tackle Haloti Ngata and running back Joique Bell to the active roster Monday, clearing the two veteran players to practice after each started training camp on the physically unable to perform list.

Ngata, who joined the Lions in an offseason trade from the Baltimore Ravens, has been working his way back from a hamstring injury. His healthy return to game action would be key to overcoming the free-agent departure of Ndamukong Suh.

Bell spent the entire offseason recovering from minor knee and Achilles surgeries, and he will again have an opportunity to earn the lead backfield role in the Lions' explosive offense.

Neither player should be expected to play in the final preseason game Thursday, but Detroit having both in the lineup for Week 1 now appears to be a realistic possibility.
